Hard rubber - also known as Ebonite - was the very first material used in the manufacturing of fountain pens. It is made from natural latex, a sustainable resource from the rainforest, which is vulcanized with sulfur. Its production ended in the 1930’s. In 1990, Recife, willing to be sustainably responsible, became the first manufacturer in the world to bring Ebonite writing instruments back to life. Each Ebonite pen is milled on a lathe, in a lengthy handcrafting process . For a long time, Recife was only manufacturer to offer colored Ebonite pens, and thus, is known for bringing it up-to-date.
