Kurt Weber (1893-1964) is a well listed Austrian painter and graphic artist whose artistic development was characterized by remarkable versatility. He attended school in Graz and studied architecture at the Allenburg Engineering School in Weimar. From there he moved to Berlin where he served in the military. After WWI, he remained in the "art metropolis" of Berlin where he met the renown German expressionists who were publishing the art journal "Der Sturm". The influence of Ludwig Kirchner and Franz Marc was prominent. He later came under the influence of Robert Delaunay, Fernand Leger and his style began to reflect abstraction as well as expressive figuration. Between 1934 and 1936, he lived and studied in Paris where hie learned to explore and incorporate color, light and movement in his paintings. He is considered to be one of the greatest representatives of Austrian modernism.
The artwork for sale is an original oil painting on stretched canvas. The piece appears to be from the period in his life when he was using broad strokes and expressive figures in the style of German expressionism. The painting measures 24" high and 20" across. It is signed "K. Weber" in red paint at the bottom right (photo 2). The artwork is predominated by earth tones (as one would expect a forest landscape to be) of greens, browns, yellow, gray, red and blue. This image looks very much like similar themed paintings by Ludwig Kirchner who was his contemporary. There is no provenance for this artwork so it is being sold as "attributed" to the artist Kurt Weber.
