Winner receives an oil painting on academy board by well listed United Kingdom artist Patrick William Adam (1854-1929). Born in Edinburgh Scotland in 1852, Patrick William Adam once said that he "was inspired to paint by the lush emerald landscapes of his homeland". The son of a well-known lawyer, Patrick chose a career in the arts rather than follow in his father's footsteps. He mastered his technique while studying under G.P. Chalmers and W. McTaggart. His travels abroad took him to Rome, Venice and Russia. He first exhibited at the RSA at the age of 18, later becoming a member and eventually showing a total of 164 paintings there. In 1878 he won the acclaimed Maclaine Watters medal.

Originally, he began honing his craft as a portraitist before specializing in landscape painting. In 1902 Adam moved to a house named Ardilea on Dirleton Road, North Berwick and remained there until his death in 1929. Most of his well-known interiors were painted there from around 1909. These interiors he painted with his light and airy brushwork in an impressionist style. The subject of interiors was not particularly common at the RSA but Adam's paintings were quick to sell: 'The examples which he sent to the Royal Academy in London were from the first well hung, and it was interesting to note how a fashion for this type of work spread and became more familiar on the walls of those Exhibitions' (Patrick J. Ford, Interior Paintings by Patrick W. Adam, R.S.A., 1920, p. 4).

In 1913 a group of like-minded artists, including Adam, F.C.B Cadell, Sir John Lavery and James Paterson founded the Society of Eight, with the intention of holding private exhibitions in which to show the products of their own endeavours. Cadell was particularly influenced by Adam's sophisticated interiors and it is in the work of Adam that we find the stimulus for the glamorous Colourist interiors that Cadell painted in the 1920s

He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London as well as the RSA. Patrick W. Adam died in North Berwick in 1929.
