A beautiful ROYAL DOULTON Set of CREAMER & SUGAR BOWL w/LID RICHELIEU #H4957 pattern, GOLD SCROLLWORK on WHITE, Circa 1959-1978 from Burslem, Staffordshire, England
DESCRIPTION: This superb quality china has gold trim that is bright and vivid on a white background. This has a wide bold gold scrollwork trim on the rims, handles and feet. The slightly scalloped rim is also embossed as are the handles. The pattern is so pretty with a classic look. We have in our eBay store more listings of different items in this Richelieu pattern.
CONDITION: While this creamer & sugar set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings or hairlines. There is no wear to the gold or utensil marks.
DIMENSIONS: The creamer is 5" handle to the opposite side with a height of 2 7/8". It has a maximum diameter of 3 7/8" and a capacity of 12 ounces. The 2 handled sugar bowl is 5 1/4" handle to handle and 4 7/8" to the top of the lid. It has a maximum diameter of 4 1/2" and a capacity of 14 ounces.
HISTORY/MARKS: Henry & James Doulton purchased an interest in Pinder, Bourne & Co. in 1877. Pinder left the business in 1882 and it was reconstituted under the name Doulton & Co., Burslem. The Royal Warrant and the right to use “Royal” in the name of its products were granted in 1901. The business continued under Henry Lewis Doulton from 1897-1919 and then under his grandson, Lewis Eric Hooper, who remained chairman until 1955. This pattern, Richelieu #H4957, was produced in the 1959-1978 time period. Desmond Eyles in his book, The Doulton Burslem Wares, cites the mark as B11 as used 1959-1978. So the circa is 1959-1978.
