Original Broadway window card for Side by Side by Sondheim, the landmark Stephen Sondheim revue that played the Music Box Theatre in 1977–78. The artwork is a vivid, compartmental “shadow box” grid of theatrical objects and playful images—mannequin figure, cake, classical column, butterfly, trumpet, stylized legs, mechanical elements, and abstract scenic motifs—framed by bold black borders with the title panel “SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM” prominently centered. It’s a quintessential mid-1970s Broadway design: colorful, graphic, and highly displayable.
Condition: Visible edge wear, mild corner softening, and light surface handling consistent with age. The reverse shows toning and spotting as photographed. Please review photos carefully for exact condition.
This is an original theatrical window card, not a reproduction.
PRODUCTION & HISTORICAL CONTEXT Side by Side by Sondheim opened on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre in New York City on April 18, 1977, and the Broadway run concluded on March 19, 1978 (playing the Music Box through February 19, 1978, then transferring to the Morosco Theatre). The Broadway engagement totaled 384 performances. The revue features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, with additional music credited to Leonard Bernstein, Mary Rodgers, Richard Rodgers, Jule Styne, and others as used. The production was produced by Harold Prince in association with Ruth Mitchell, directed by Ned Sherrin, with musical staging by Bob Howe and musical director Ray Cook.
The Original Broadway Cast credited for the Broadway opening featured David Kernan, Millicent Martin, Julie N. McKenzie, and Ned Sherrin. Design credits for the Broadway production include Scenic Design by Peter Docherty, Costume Design by Florence Klotz, Lighting Design by Ken Billington, Hair Design by Vidal Sassoon Salons, and Sound Design by Jack Mann.
WHY THIS IS A STRONG COLLECTOR PIECE This title is foundational Sondheim collecting: an early, major Broadway revue that helped codify Sondheim’s canon for audiences while his career was still unfolding. Original Broadway window cards from revues are often tougher to find than those for long-running blockbuster musicals, and this particular design—with its bold grid composition and saturated palette—frames beautifully and reads instantly at a distance.
