This striking theatrical window card promotes the touring production of Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations, the acclaimed jukebox musical chronicling the rise of the legendary Motown group. The design is bold and graphic, employing a retro Americana palette of red, white, blue, and golden yellow. Across the top, the title “AIN’T TOO PROUD” appears in distressed red lettering, accented with a small starburst detail that evokes mid-century concert poster design.
Centered in the composition is a dynamic image of sharply dressed legs mid-step—an unmistakable nod to the Temptations’ iconic synchronized choreography. The dancer’s polished shoes and tailored trousers appear against a golden circular backdrop, with radiating red stripes suggesting movement and stage lights. Blue stars and block lettering reinforce the vintage concert aesthetic, while the lower portion announces “LIVE ON TOUR,” identifying this piece as a promotional card for the national touring production.
The printing style intentionally incorporates a lightly distressed texture throughout the typography and graphics, giving the card the look of a vintage soul-era poster while remaining crisp and modern. From the images provided, the card appears clean and well preserved with strong color saturation and no obvious major flaws.
PRODUCTION & HISTORICAL CONTEXT Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations features a book by Dominique Morisseau and is built around the extraordinary catalog of songs made famous by The Temptations and the Motown label. The musical was directed by Des McAnuff with choreography by Sergio Trujillo and musical supervision and arrangements by Kenny Seymour. Scenic design was by Robert Brill, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Howell Binkley, and sound design by Steve Canyon Kennedy. The production was produced by Ira Pittelman along with Tom Hulce and the Nederlander Organization, among others.
After successful pre-Broadway engagements at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and the Kennedy Center, the musical opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre on March 21, 2019 and closed on January 16, 2022 after 445 performances and 24 previews. The Original Broadway Cast included Derrick Baskin as Otis Williams, Jawan M. Jackson as Melvin Franklin, Jeremy Pope as Eddie Kendricks, Ephraim Sykes as David Ruffin, and James Harkness as Paul Williams. The production received strong critical response and earned the 2019 Tony Award for Best Choreography for Sergio Trujillo.
Following its Broadway success, the show launched a national touring production bringing the story and music of The Temptations to audiences across the United States. Touring window cards such as this were produced to promote engagements in major cities during the tour.
WHY THIS IS A STRONG COLLECTOR PIECE This window card represents one of the most successful modern jukebox musicals centered on Motown music and the legacy of The Temptations. The show’s Broadway run, Tony-winning choreography, and strong touring life have made it a significant entry in contemporary musical theatre history. For collectors, the design stands out for its bold graphic style, which cleverly evokes vintage Motown concert posters while maintaining a clean modern theatrical aesthetic. The imagery referencing the group’s signature choreography makes the piece immediately recognizable to fans of the music and the show. As touring window cards are typically produced in smaller quantities than mass-market posters, they remain appealing display pieces for both theatre and music memorabilia collectors.
