Originally designed for challenging combat conditions in the tropical jungles of Vietnam and Southeast Asia, these Belleville Shoe Company of Belleville, Illinois just across the river from St. Louis, who
have been making military boots since at least the Korean War, are an ideal choice for
individuals who value
both functionality, performance, and military or tactical style looks. These boots
feature a breathable mesh
upper, ensuring your feet stay cool and comfortable throughout the day.
The Panama tread (see below) has excellent mud clearing capability... I know I wear these all the time...The military speed lace closure ensures a secure fit, while the regular
shoe width (C,D) accommodates a range of (medium regular) foot sizes/widths. The reinforced (not
steel toe) round toe design and
lightweight construction make them a practical choice for year-round
wear, across all seasons (maybe not winter). Then the built in spike protection may still come in handy in some situations....
Note on Wellco, Ro-search and Panama tread: In 1965, as a result of unsatisfactory performance of previous Army combat footwear in the jungles of Viet Nam, the Army adopted Wellco's Ro-Search's (then patented) technology for the manufacture of its hot-weather boots, and this product thus became known as the “Viet Nam Boot.” Later the technology used to manufacture the Viet Nam Boot was adopted for all Army combat footwear. Wellco became a prominent supplier of such footwear to the US Military in 1965, and the remainder of the Army’s needs were supplied for a number of years by three other (major) companies, all of them using Ro-Search supplied molds and presses, as well as technical advice. To this day, the technology is used to manufacture military combat boots. True to its heritage as a developer of footwear manufacturing technology, Wellco’s subsidiary Ro-Search Inc., perfected and patented in 1957 a new technique for molding and attaching a rubber sole to a welted upper. (Direct Molded Sole - DMS) This was known as “Process 82,” to indicate that it was considered to be twenty five years ahead of its time.
The 1968 version of the tropical combat boot retained the integral spike resistant steel insole of its
predecessor, but featured mud shedding "Panama" outsoles, rather than the traditional Vibram design. The
Panama sole was conceived by Sgt Raymond Dobie of the Panama Mobile Force, under the supervision of
Cresson H. Kearny, in early 1944, though it was not officially tested until 1967. The clever design utilized the
flexing of the foot to create pressure that squeezed the mud out of the tread, thereby significantly improving
traction. Forty pairs of the Panama sole boot were tested at Tropic Test Centers in the Panama Canal Zone,
while the 9th Infantry Division tested others in early 1968 as part of the ENSURE program on footwear for
inundated areas. The testing verified the self-cleaning properties of the design and on 9th April 1968 Army
Material Command directed the Panama sole be used on all Tropical Combat Boots.
Many sellers on eBay who don't know much about the history of jungle boots, or modern boot construction for that matter, incorrectly assume that "RoSearch" is a brand of boots. It most certainly is not..!! It is, as noted above, the logo for a research group within the Wellco Boot Company back in the day (1957-2005). Many other familiar boot manufacturers who licensed Wellco's DMS technology were required by patent and trademark law to put the RoSearch logo on the bottom of their DMS process made soles.... until the original patents ran out in the mid 2000s......
Note: These boots are being sold as-is. The
tread has very little, if any, signs of wear in all the typical wear
locations (photos 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10). Mold nibs and flashing still evident. There are no issues
at all with these boots that I could find. No
rips, tears or stains on the breathable Cordura mesh upper fabric with
padded collar. The original manufacturer's label (photo 2) shows no
signs
of wear or use... These boots sold online for over $239 from online
sellers and more direct from the Belleville website.... As of now still in
production... Ask all
questions well before the last day of the auction..!!
Seller's Note: I have two identical pairs of these 13-1/2Rs, and for the Rest of March ONLY, I will sell both pairs together for $175 plus shipping... Please CONTACT Me BEFORE Bidding...!!!
