Hi,
I'm happy to offer this pair of large, Federal fence post finials, circa 1810. They're a very rare example of the dramatic and unusual designs based on Ancient Greek and Roman forms that were used during the early Republic. They most likely adorned fence posts that flanked a stylish Federal doorway and were the height of avant-garde fashion at the time.
Of course they would look great on a mantle, but could also be displayed in either an antique or modern setting. They were obviously exposed to the elements and have been painted many times over the years.
They measure around 13" tall and 5 1/2" wide. There is some variation between the two since they were hand turned.
Please email me if you have any questions. Thank you.
