The Builder’s Journey: From Micro-Brands to Movement

For Fr. Gregory Vance, S.J., the path to watchmaking wasn’t a straight line—it was a series of gears, springs, and the occasional part lost in the living room carpet.

A long-time collector of "micro-brand" watches, Fr. Gregory’s obsession eventually moved from the wrist to the workbench. In late 2024, after countless hours of YouTube tutorials, he decided to see if he could build a watch from scratch. The beginning was humble: he broke a movement, lost a second hand to the floorboards, and realized that watchmaking is "85% fun and 15% absolute frustration."

As the Chaplain at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise, Fr. Gregory found that the craft offered something rare: a way to live "analogue" in a frighteningly digital age. Through practice and patience, that 15% frustration turned into precision. His work gained momentum in 2025 when a custom watch—featuring a dial fabricated by his own students—raised $650 at the school’s annual fundraiser.

The "No Ghost" Philosophy Fr. Gregory’s builds are defined by mechanical integrity. He uses reliable Seiko "NH" series movements, but with a strict rule: if the dial doesn't have a date window, the movement doesn't have a date position. It "offends his sensibilities" to have a "ghost" click in the crown.

Every watch he lists is a product of focused attention and hand-eye coordination—a mechanical labor of love that he hopes brings as much joy to your wrist as it did to his workbench.
