Named on the cabinet card as "Thomlinson" and "Graham" these names match a wrestling duo from Cumbria and Westmorland John Hutton Thomlinson 1840-1914 and his wrestling partner John Graham who are reported in newspapers of having won numerous cups, medals and trophies
Thomlinson was born at Carlisle, Cumbria, and won numerous prizes, having once fought before Louis Napoleon, Prince Imperial of France in 1871.
Both men were prominent exponents of the Cumberland & Westmorland style of wrestling, a traditional form of "back hold" wrestling where opponents start with their arms clasped around each other. They were often paired together for exhibition matches at shows and fairs across the North of England.
