Dinky Mercedes-Benz Racing Car (1934 W25) Blue 23C Vintage 1946-50 Restored

Nicely restored model that’s now approaching 80 years. Originally blue and repainted the same colour. The original rivets appear to be in place. The driver has been repainted a slightly darker brown. Hubs have been painted red. It rolls freely on reproduction herringbone pattern rubber tyres.

This casting was made by Meccano’s Dinky Toys between 1936-40 and then 1946-50 after production stopped during WW2. Pre-war, it was sold as “Mercedes-Benz Racing Car”. From 1946 however, (possibly, part due to post war sensitivities, part that the actual car stopped racing in 1937) the name was changed to “Large Open Racing Car”.

Blue painted diecast metal body and riveted tinplate baseplate with “MERCEDES BENZ” stamped into it. Silver detailing for the front grille and side exhaust. Brown painted driver. Ridged metal hubs. Straight axles with flanged ends.

The Mercedes-Benz W25 was a Grand Prix racing car designed by Daimler-Benz AG for the 1934 Grand Prix season, in which new rules were introduced, and no championship was held. In 1935, the European Championship was resumed, and it was won by Rudolf Caracciola in a W25. In modified form, the W25 remained in use until 1937, when it was succeeded by the Mercedes-Benz W125.
