Winner receives a small watercolor painting on paper board by well listed Hudson River School Artist Frank Anderson (1844-1891). The painting is titled "Road Along The Hudson" and is dated 1881 in the lower left corner, seen magnified in picture 4. The painting has provenance from a Christie's NY 1981 sale, although we are unsure of the lot number. The Christie's label was removed from the verso, although remnants are still there. Being sold unframed, the painting does have condition issues. There are several tiny nicks, losses, and tack holes around the sheet edges. There is a pencil tip sized pressure dent with attendant loss and touch up in the upper left quadrant. The corners are rounded with losses in each of the four corners. The paper has consistent, even toning. The painting measures roughly 4.25" x 7.5". Below is some information about the artist, who has recent auction results up to $91,000. Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have prior to bidding or making an offer. Thank you for checking out our listing.
Frank Anderson, a native of Ohio, was born in Mt. Sterling in 1844. Like his father, Anderson was an inventor, and is credited with designing improvements to the telegraph. As a young child, Anderson produced sketches and watercolor paintings. By the time he was twenty, he had developed a high degree of skill in sketching and painting. A luminist painter of the Hudson River Valley landscape, which he loved, Anderson resided in Peekskill, New York from the age of eighteen on. Anderson was very shy of public events, but his work received the praise of New York art critics. His works were exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts between 1861 and 1888, and are to be found in private collections in Peekskill, as well as the Adirondack Museum and the Hudson River Museum. He died in 1891.
