Product Description

Guéré mask from Ivory Coast. Original piece over 40 years old. Piece on base.

The Guérés designate an ethnic group from Côte d'Ivoire, living in the western region of the country, near Liberia. It is located in the departments of Bangolo, Duékoué, Guiglo and Toulepleu and has lived in Eburnie for more than seven centuries. If these people live today mainly between the Cavally River (Liberian border), the Sassandra River (to the east) and to the south of the regions of the 18 mountains, in the past they were settled further north, in the current Dan country, but were gradually forced to retreat into the forest which characterizes their region, mainly because of the Mandingo invasions of the 17th century.

The Wobés and the Guérés in reality constitute a single people, the We people, artificially divided by the French colonial administration.
