1849 Great Britain "Godless Florin" Silver Coin — PCGS AU53
════════════════════════════════════════
OVERVIEW
════════════════════════════════════════
This is a rare and historically significant example of the famous
"Godless Florin" — one of the most celebrated and sought-after
coins in all of British numismatic history.
Struck in 1849 during the reign of Queen Victoria, this coin was
designed by the legendary Royal Mint engraver William Wyon, widely
regarded as his finest masterpiece.
The coin earned its iconic nickname because, unlike every previous
British coin, it omitted the traditional Latin motto "DEI GRATIA"
(By the Grace of God). This shocking omission caused a wave of
public outrage across Victorian England. Parliament responded swiftly,
and the controversial design was withdrawn after only two years of
production (1848–1849), making surviving examples genuinely scarce
and highly collectible today.
This coin has been professionally graded and encapsulated by PCGS
(Professional Coin Grading Service) — the world's most trusted
numismatic grading authority — and awarded a grade of AU53
(About Uncirculated), reflecting excellent preservation with only
the lightest traces of wear on the highest points.
