Thanks again for supporting small business ! this box is a simple work of art ! the wood work , the burled elements and inlay are simply stunning , this appears to be what may have been a game box ! , certainly to small to be a lap desk , we have seen some similar examples , this is probably made in the 1850-1880 range, I would assume  French, there is no key , but the lock is present , the top flap is removable and whatever held it in place years ago is missing , super clean and ready to use
