The Sketchbook from Auschwitz, preserved in the collections of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, is published here in its entirety for the first time. The sketchbook was discovered in 1947 hidden inside a bottle concealed beneath the foundations of a barrack in Birkenau, near Crematoria IV and V.
Created secretly inside the camp and signed only “MM,” the drawings depict scenes from Auschwitz that prisoners were strictly forbidden to record. The artist risked his life documenting the reality of camp existence and the extermination process.
This extraordinary work is unique for several reasons: it contains rare depictions of the murder of Jews deported to Auschwitz, scenes showing exhausted prisoners condemned to death, and the only known artistic representation of the so-called Old Jewish Ramp (Alte Judenrampe), where transports arrived between 1942 and 1944.
Richly illustrated and deeply moving, this publication is both a historical document and a rare testimony created inside Auschwitz itself.
