DESCRIPTION: This set was skillfully hand painted by the artist. The design includes white lily flowers on graduated green washes. The washes are deep green fading to a very light green to pink to grey. The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The gold trim on the rim is very shiny and accents the smooth rim. The cream band next to the gold rim has a geometric design.
CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, its condition is superb. It looks beautiful and makes a great display piece or can be used every day. We can find no defects or damage. There is slight, age appropriate wear to the gold on the sugar handles. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. Overall, the gold trim is glossy.
DIMENSIONS: The creamer is 5" handle to spout and has a height of 3 1/2". It has a maximum diameter of 3 1/2" and a capacity of 9 ounces. The sugar bowl is 5 5/8" handle to handle and has a height of 3 7/8" to the top of the lid. It has a maximum diameter of 4" and a capacity of 12 ounces.
HISTORY/MARKS: The roots of RS Prussia go back to 1868 when Reinhold Schlegelmilch purchased the forge for the purpose of establishing a porcelain factory. The factory soon became the largest employer in the area and despite the restrictions imposed by the McKinley Tariff act of 1884 continued to grow. The "RS" initials stand for Reinhold Schlegelmilch, founder of that porcelain factory specializing in hard paste porcelain at Suhl in Prussia which is present-day Germany. The work of his two sons, Arnold and Erhard, made the mark bearing his initials famous. Reinhold & Arnold operated the Suhl factory while Erhard established a porcelain factory in Tillowitz, Germany in 1894. Reinhold died in 1906 and later Arnold closed the porcelain factory in Suhl in December 1917, due to World War I and a shortage of people skilled in the making of such hard paste porcelain. Arnold joined Erhard at the Tillowitz factory which operated as part of Reinhold Schlegelmilch Enterprise until the death in 1934 of both brothers. The factory in Tillowitz remained opened under Schlegelmilch control (under sons of Arnold and finally Arnold’s granddaughter) until 1945 when it came under the administration of Poland after WWII. The set has the green underglaze mark was used from 1910-1945 at the Tillowitz, Germany factory. This is mark #9 in Collector’s Encyclopedia of R.S. Prussia, 4th edition by Mary Frank Gaston.
