What Are the Symptoms of a Bad CV Joint?

    1. Noises when Turning

    2. Cracks on the Boot

    3. Wobbly Axle

    4. Bouncing or Vibrations

    CV Axles Installation:

    Tools and Materials Needed:

    Tools:

    Socket set
    Wrench set
    Torque wrench
    Pliers
    Hammer
    Screwdriver (flathead and Phillips)
Jack and jack stands or ramps
    CV axle puller (optional)

    Materials:

    New CV axles
    Grease (if not pre-greased)
    Replacement cotter pins (if applicable)

    Installation Steps:

    1.Preparation:

Park your ATV on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.

Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues.

    2.Lift the ATV:

Use a jack to lift the front or rear of the ATV, depending on where you are replacing the CV axles.

Secure it with jack stands for safety.

    3.Remove the Wheel:

Use a socket wrench to remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.

This will give you access to the suspension components.

    4.Access the CV Joint:

Depending on the model, you may need to remove portions of the suspension or steering components (such as tie rods or lower control arms) to gain access to the CV joint.

If necessary, use a hammer to gently tap out any retaining clips or brackets securing the CV joint.

    5.Remove the Old CV Axle:

Locate the CV joint at the wheel hub and the differential.

For the hub side, you may need to use a pry bar to pop the axle out of the hub.

Be careful not to damage the surrounding components.

For the differential side, you might need to remove more components or just pull the axle straight out, depending on the design.

    6.Prepare the New CV Axle:

If your new CV axle isn’t pre-greased, pack the CV joint with grease according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Inspect the new axle for any defects before installation.

    7.Install the New CV Axle:

Insert the outer end of the new CV axle into the wheel hub and press it in until it clicks securely.

Guide the inner end of the axle into the differential. Ensure it seats properly.

    8.Reassemble Components:

Reattach any components that were removed during the process (e.g., suspension parts, tie rods).

Tighten bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specifications, using a torque wrench for accuracy.

    9.Reinstall the Wheel:

Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.

Lower the ATV and then use the torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque.

    10.Reconnect Battery:

Reconnect the battery leads you disconnected earlier.

    11.Test Drive:

Start the ATV and take it for a short test drive. Listen for any unusual noises and check for proper operation.

    12.Final Check:

After the test drive, recheck all bolts and connections to ensure everything is secure.

    Tips:

Always refer to your ATV's service manual for specific instructions related to your model.

If you encounter resistance or difficulty during removal or installation, double-check for hidden fasteners or clips.

It’s advisable to work on one side at a time to maintain reference points for reassembly.

If you’re unsure at any point, consider consulting a professional mechanic for assistance.
