Antique 18th century map of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. This is a copperplate engraving printed on laid paper. All colors were hand-colored. It is in very good condition with slight foxing, a fold line and wrinkle, and small loss at the fold line (see photo of Charlestown paragraph).
This original hand-colored copperplate engraving is a significant historical artifact reflecting Italian North America during the 18th century.
Highlights:
- Titled "Parte Orientale della Florida, della Georgia, e Carolina Meridionale"
(Eastern Part of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina)
- Language is Italian which helps distinctive and narrowing the publisher significantly.
- "Fog. XI" appears in the lower right corner — indicating this is Foglio (Sheet) 11 of a larger atlas.
- The Italian language, the folio reference, and the American Revolutionary War content strongly suggest this is from Zatta's Atlante Novissimo — published in Venice by Antonio Zatta, circa 1778–1785. Zatta produced a landmark Italian atlas covering North America in remarkable detail. Verified by note on back.
- The Carolina coast is visible with Charleston ("Charlestown") prominently noted
- A historical annotation references a British naval attack on Charleston in June 1776 — making this map contemporary with or just after the American Revolution
- "Stipulati nel 1738" references treaties of 1738
- The legend ("Spiegazione de segni") identifies cities, villages, Indian settlements, forts, roads, and waterfalls
Authentication:
- Copperplate indentation is visible on the paper near the margins
- Grid of vertical "chain lines" and smaller horizontal "laid lines" can be seen when map is held to a strong light source. This is typical of pre-1800 paper
- Colors were hand-colored.
- Watermark present with large initials, probably the papermakers name or initials. Zatta's Atlante Novissimo is documented as being printed on paper with watermarks so finding a clear watermark is consistent with an authentic Zatta atlas sheet.
The map measures 21" wide by 15" tall and is framed in a simple wood frame". It is mounted to a mat behind a single pane of glass. It contains a back sheet and is mounted, at the top center, to the back sheet and Can be lifted from the bottom.
