~ Murphy Lab ~
Murphy Lab, established within the Custom Shop, is a newly opened lab within the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville. It specializes in guitar aging (a process that replicates the aged appearance and playability of vintage guitars) using the latest technology based on scientific verification.
Tom Murphy, a founding member of the Gibson Custom Shop and project leader for the Historic Collection development, has since made a name for himself with the aging technique, which brings the look and feel of vintage guitars to new instruments. Backed by Tom's passion for vintage guitars and his deep knowledge, his techniques beautifully recreate the natural lacquer cracks and wear from playing on Gibson guitars.
Tom Murphy and Gibson scientifically analyzed the nitrocellulose lacquer of the 1950s and 1960s, which develops weather-checking over time. They unraveled the process of change, conducted extensive testing on prototypes of various models, and developed a lacquer process that reproduces natural weather checking just like vintage guitars.
The Murphy Lab was conceived when Tom Murphy led the Gibson Custom Shop team in testing various body shapes, finishes, and aging levels based on prototypes. As a result, it was established within the Gibson Custom Shop to pursue unprecedented realism and attention to detail in aging.
Tom Murphy's presence and his artistic creations have played a significant role in Gibson's history and will continue to be carried on forever as the Murphy Lab.
This is a 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue with "Heavy Aged," the third of four aging levels.
Heavy Aged replicates the wear and tear on the neck and body from hard playing during tours and gigs, including belt buckle marks. It features heavily aged hardware by Murphy Lab. This model offers a truly authentic feel, showcasing the masterful craftsmanship of Murphy Lab's skilled artisans. The realistic finish, including the color, sheen, and weather checking, gives the impression of a guitar that has been played and cherished for many years. The rolled fingerboard edges provide an excellent grip, a detail that players will appreciate.
The basic specifications are based on the latest Historic Spec, including unpotted Custombucker Alnico III pickups, updated assembly, and True Historic parts. The sharp, responsive picking action instantly enchants the player with the Les Paul tone the moment they plug their guitar into the amp!
Not only does it offer excellent clarity when the tone knob is rolled off, but its controllable assembly maintains a pleasant brightness even at lower volumes, making it a perfect match for modern playing styles!
