WHY COLLECT:

Complete Description

This series of five small-format landscapes entitled "Paisatges de la memòria" (Landscapes of Memory) by Pep Camps captures moments suspended in time—rolling hills, distant mountains, open fields—rendered in soft, layered tones that blur the boundary between memory and perception. Each work measures 14 x 14 cm and is executed in oil on board, signed and dated 2003 on the reverse.

The subtle gradients of color and atmospheric effects evoke a sense of quiet nostalgia, reflecting the artist's enduring interest in temporality and the inner landscape. The use of modest materials and traditional gilded frames enhances the tactile quality of the ensemble, suggesting a personal archive of visual impressions. These landscapes do not aim for topographical precision but instead serve as portals into emotional and spiritual reflection—hallmarks of Camps's mature style.

Presented together, the five works create a visual rhythm, inviting viewers to contemplate the passage of time, the stillness of nature, and the imprint of place on memory. The series represents Camps's exploration of landscape as a vehicle for introspection rather than documentation, characteristic of his work during the early 2000s.

About Pep Camps (Born 1962)

Pep Camps is a Spanish visual artist from Girona whose work explores memory, time, and the spiritual dimension of human experience. Though initially trained in Art History at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Camps developed his pictorial practice independently, drawing inspiration from international Pop Art and figures such as Gerhard Richter and Malcolm Morley.

His artistic language is marked by the layering of translucent imagery with gestural brushwork and techniques reminiscent of screen printing. Drawing from mass media, literature, and personal iconography, Camps combines portraits, objects, Buddhist imagery, and landscapes to evoke emotional states and reflections on the passage of time.

Since the 1980s, Camps has exhibited extensively throughout Spain. His solo shows include presentations at Galería Moriarty (Madrid), Galería Denise Levy (Barcelona), and Palau de la Mercè (Girona). His work is part of several institutional and private collections, most notably the Fundació Vila Casas in Barcelona.

In 2022, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, the city of Girona honored him with Temps i pintura, a major retrospective spread across four cultural venues featuring over 200 works spanning his career. This exhibition confirmed his status as one of Catalonia's most significant contemporary painters.

In addition to his studio practice, Pep Camps is a dedicated educator at the Municipal School of Art in Girona, where he continues to inspire new generations of artists.
