John Trumbull (1756–1843) was called the "Painter of the Revolution" for his pivotal historical paintings documenting the American Revolutionary War. Born in Lebanon, Connecticut, to a prominent family—his father was Governor of Connecticut—Trumbull served as an officer and aide-de-camp to General George Washington during the Revolution. After resigning his commission in 1777, he studied under Benjamin West in England, then began his monumental series of American history paintings. His masterwork, Declaration of Independence, depicts the presentation of the draft to Congress on June 28, 1776. Created with Thomas Jefferson's assistance in Paris, the massive oil canvas was commissioned in 1817 and installed in the Capitol rotunda in 1826. This iconic work, along with General George Washington at Trenton, appears on American currency and establishes Trumbull as the primary visual interpreter of American independence.
