Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was one of the most prolific artists of the 19th century and enjoyed the greatest success under the Second Empire, enjoying the personal support of Emperor Napoleon III.
Carrier-Belleuse was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1840. Noted for his skill by the great houses working bronze in Paris like Barbedienne or Denière, he soon received many orders for decorative objects: candelabras, clocks, fireplace trims, etc.
Carrier-Belleuse devoted himself a lot to sculpture and contributed to the decoration of important buildings, such as the pediment that surmounts the main entrance of the Banque de France, the frieze of the Palais de la Bourse de Bruxelles, for the Paris Opera, he makes among others 2 monumental torches for the grand staircase."
Carrier-Belleuse was, towards the end of his life, director of works of art at the Manufacture de Sèvres. Its passage was marked by the renewal of collections and the modernization of style.
