This lovely and peculiarly decorated box is made of (more than likely) rubberwood. The decorations on top are pinned down but not completely; this is especially true of the figure of the woman, who is pinned down at 6 points around her perimeter, and her edges do not sit flat against the wood. We consider this to be a charming peculiarity of the box, which may have been made for a wedding event, as the female figure appears to be dressed in traditional South Asian attire with conspicuous layering of jewelry. There is a velvet-lined insert inside.
Reiterating from the "Condition Description" section:
This vintage and possibly antique box locks securely. There are a few scratches, in particular on the front side. On the underside, there are 2 significant cracks, one a complete break and traversing the width of the wood (the bottom is a much thinner wood panel); it stays in place, since there is a velvet-lined panel facing upward above it. Buyer can fill it with wood filler if desired. The blue velvet inside the box is shedding moderately from age, and some of the more vulnerable areas can be seen in the photos, particularly in the area on the underside of the cover. The tin decorations on the cover are not pinned down around all edges, so they are not evenly flush against the wood. The felt feet liners are newly applied. Please examine photos carefully.
