This is a very charming early 19th century portrait painting of the 11th and last Earl of Thanet 1775-1849.
The Earl of the Isle of Thanet was shortened to Earl of Thanet which was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1628 for Nicholas Tufton, 1st Baron Tufton. He had already succeeded as second Baron of Hothfield in 1631 and been created Baron Tufton of Tufton in the County of Sussex in 1626 also in the Peerage of England.
This is very well painted portrait miniature of Henry Tufton who was the last Earl of Thanet. A full length portrait of Henry as a boy in the manner of Gainsboroughs pink boy possibly painted by Francis Nichols is in the Abbot Hall Art Collection in the Kendal Gallery.
The painting is in a smart oval gilt metal frame which measures 10 cms by 8 cms overall.
