Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, also known as a dorei. Featuring the face and bust of the Buddhist deity Kannon, it is brown with a triangular shape and three legs on the bottom. It has a small clay ball inside and a braided, dark-colored string tied at the top. A paper with characters is attached. Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (approximately 13,000 to 2,300 years ago), when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
