I work for a goldsmith and am always looking for ways to use up stray bits of gold that come into the store.  In this case, the math works like this:

One snappy little shirt stud

+

One simple ladies wedding band

-

One creepy fake pearl

+

One dark blood-red garnet cabochon

=

One cool little ring!

The six-ray star shirt stud was obviously part of a set, but we only had one of them for some reason.  A cruddy fake half-pearl was plopped in the middle, but Boss replaced The Icky Fake Thing with a nice natural 1.2 carat garnet cabochon.

Boss soldered the shirt stud onto one of the 80 million generic pre-owned wedding bands we have lying around the store (each one tells a story...which we generally have to listen to...unfortunately.)

This band is a simple half-round, 2mm wide ladies band.  It's stamped ARTCARVED which is not a brand but a line of jewelry kicked around from one US jewelry manufacturer to another through mergers and acquisitions until it was finally abandoned in 1986.  So while we have no idea how old the shirt stud* is, we can safely say the band is at least 40 years old.

The shirt stud is not stamped.  (Actually it was stamped, but on the sticky-outy thing that goes through your buttonhole, and I didn't get a photo of it before Boss melted it.)  I have acid scratch test photo results if you're interested.

This ring is a size 7 and can be resized.

The face of the ring is a little over 10mm (about 3/8") tall and wide.  The garnet is 6mm in diameter.

This ring weighs 2.6 grams.

* We reckon it dates before the late 1970's because once gold prices started going up, fake pearls and 14K didn't have much to do with each other.
