This item works in the same way all other switch boxes do, it needs to draw power from your transformer / controller, and should be used with a standard CDU. 
This box is compatible with other brands, if you already have one (such as gaugemaster PCU2), it can connect using the aux out port. This device also has an aux out, to connect to more boxes should you need to.
