Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, also known as a dorei. Representing a tanuki, a Japanese raccoon dog, it is depicted as brown with black and white painted details, and features a cute, round shape. It has a small ball inside and a braided orange and red string tied at the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (approximately 13,000 to 2,300 years ago), when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
