Antique VENETIAN Italian Murano - Barovier?

Blue/Gold Swirl GOBLET

with Applied Figural Swans

This is very fine glass and its design executed by a master artisan.

This is the very last of a set from an old New England Yankee Downeast Maine family of wealth, descendants of the founder of Salem, Massachusetts in 1626.

The piece is not signed but there is no doubt that it was made in Murano, Italy, hand blown with much attention to detail, as well as all the time put into the process. A handwritten note in the estate box said simply BAROVIER, so it is suggested it may be a goblet from a set made by Barovier before they became Barovier & Toso.

Very detailed and delicate piece hand crafted of a light blue glass with gold fleck accents.   The bowl and foot are blown in a swirl pattern that shows the intricate fineness of hand-blown glass. The blue glass has a random spatter of gold flecks that catch the light.  We have seen many Venetian goblets in pink and clear, but rarely have we seen anything like this goblet in blue.

The stem is accented in with two applied pink and gold figural swans (or dragons?) arranged back to back, open wings touching. Looking at it through the glass cabinet, we kids used to call them dragons!  Perhaps they are indeed dragons... But based on research of the era, we believe them to be swans... If you know, let us know!!!

Amazing flawless condition, considering this was made somewhere between 1890s and 1920s based on the estate box it was found in.  Not a chip or crack anywhere.

Appx 4" diam x 7.5" tall

Should be opened over a soft surface, like a bed, just in case.....

FROM THE WEB:

Barovier e Toso is the oldest glass company in Italy and its history dates back to as far as 1295. Murano had been a centre of fine glasswork since the Middle Ages---producing the glass that bore its name----but the pieces were lavish and expensive specialty pieces that only the wealthy could afford.

-------In 1866 Giovanni Barovier and his nephews Guiseppe, Benvenuto. and Benedetto formally incorporated the company called simply BAROVIER. In 1884, Barovier purchased the Antonio Salviati glass firm, Vetreria Salviati & Co., after Salviati decided to separate from the glass production business. The contract included an agreement to retain the “Salviati” name until Antonio's death. Consequently, the Barovier name is changed to “Artisti Barovier” in 1890.

---------The company quickly became known for their refined glass works, and they entered important exhibitions to promote the business. In 1919, Ercole Barovier together with his brother Nicolo become partners of their father's workshop, and the company name is changed to “Vetreria Artistica Barovier.” Under the leadership of Ercole, who became managing director in 1920, new designs were introduced which include sophisticated polychrome “a murrine” vases, limited series Primavera glassware, and unusual animals blown in glass.

--------The firm's creative soul was indeed Ercole Barovier, active over a period stretching from 1922 to 1972. Sophisticated glass patterns such as “primavera” and “crepuscolo” win great acclaim for the company. The heir of one of the oldest Murano glassblowers families, he created more than 23,000 glass models, often inventing outright a number of manufacturing processes that contributed a great deal to the renewal of glassmaking art.

--------Ercole was a tireless creator of new styles and vitreous textures, and he devoted much time perfecting hot coloring without fusion.  His exuberant taste and lively personality gave rise to extremely striking glass “textures” with flecks of gold and silver, air bubbles and insertions of different materials, achieving unique impressions. One of the most interesting techniques he developed in that period was called “crepuscolo”, obtained by placing iron wool between two layers of hot glass.

---------From 1928 to 1970 Ercole Barovier's latest designs were introduced in regular fashion at the Venice Biennales. Ercole remained the artistic director of the firm until 1972, the year his son, Angelo, who had worked at the company since In 1947, succeeded him.  In 1936, Vetreria Artistica Barovier merged with Ferro Toso, specializing in crystalline glass, mother-of-pearl glass, and gold-free cornelian red glass. The current name of Barovier & Toso emerged in 1942.

--------The firm is still active under the management of Angelo Barovier and his son Jacopo, with Giovanni Toso. Works by the Barovier & Toso glass factory are on show in practically all the most important museums throughout the world and in many private collections. Today, they mostly feature fabulous glass lighting fixtures, lamps, and shades.

-------This style of goblet is featured In the book Exquisite Glass Ornaments - The nineteenth-century Murano glass revival in the de Boos-Smith collection by Rosa Barovier Mentasti.
