Coming from the North, the Gouros, a Mandé population, arrived in this region in the 16th century.
The Gouro are called Lo or Golo and call themselves Kwéni.
The Baoulé call them Gouro.
Gu or Gou masks are mainly feminine masks that accompany Zamble and Zaouli masks.
These masks follow the men's mask in ceremonies.
They belong to the cult of Yo, and have practically disappeared due to lack of attractiveness, their dance no longer being impressive enough.
Nowadays when the Gu mask is mentioned, men shrug their shoulders and say that it is a mask of the old generation of dancers.
The Zamble mask is very particular to the Guro ethnic group. Half leopard, half antelope, it constitutes the link between profane masks and sacred masks.
