Ramshorn snails are a particularly prolific egg-laying freshwater snail (they bear live young and don't lay eggs) that come in a variety of colors and patterns. Their shell diameter can grow to a size of 1-2 inches.
Benefits of ramshorn snails
Waste and Debris Removal:
They are scavengers, consuming uneaten food, algae, and other organic matter, helping to keep the tank clean and preventing water quality issues.
Algae Control:
They happily consume many types of unsightly algae that grows on the aquarium glass, plants (they do not eat your plants, though!), the substrate, etc.
Low-Maintenance:
Ramshorn snails are hardy and adaptable, making them a good choice for beginner aquarists.
Inexpensive:
They are relatively inexpensive to purchase, making them an affordable option for stocking an aquarium.
Not Plant-Eaters:
Ramshorn snails do not consume live plants, making them a safe addition to planted aquariums. They may however feed upon dying/decaying plant matter.
Good for Shrimp Tanks:
They are a good addition to shrimp tanks, as they are peaceful and will help to break down any leftover waste not eaten by the shrimp.
Reproduction:
Ramshorn snails are hermaphroditic egg layers. If at least 2 snails are present, they will be able to reproduce. The snails reach sexual maturity in roughly 2 months, so it's important to manage their population to prevent overpopulation if you don't want them to breed too quickly.
Water parameters:
pH 7.0-8.0 (if the pH is too acidic it can cause shell erosion)
Hardness 6-12 dH
Temperature 60°F-80°F
