These wine caddies are handmade in my workshop in deepest West Sussex. They are made from beautiful quality white oak “barrel staves” upcycled from used scotch whisky barrels which were themselves originally upcycled from bourbon whiskey barrels from the USA – more on the history and source of the wood later in this description if you are interested!
The caddy is designed to fit over the neck of most wine bottles and hold 2 wine glasses securely while the bottle is carried in one hand, or two if you find a wine bottle difficult to grip or to heavy for one hand.
Each stave is cut to size and hand prepared to enhance the grain of the wood and ensure each piece has an attractive arced shape. The ‘external’ face of the barrel stave is hand planed and sanded to remove some of the light charring, years of aging, and rust from the barrel hoops to reveal the beautiful grain of the white oak. Some charring is left which creates a unique black/white zebra like mottled grain pattern as shown in the photos.
The internal face of the stave will have been heavily charred and this charring is removed by handed and then hand sanded to leave some colour in the wood. The edges on each caddy are lightly finished and the piece is hand-sanded to a smooth finish before being treated with danish oil and waxed to bring out the natural beauty of the wood.
Because of the nature of the hand charring of the barrels and as wood is a natural material each of these caddies has its own unique grain pattern and no two will ever be exactly the same. The caddy in the photos in each listing will be the one you receive though.
The caddy would also be a great way to display your favourite bottle of wine and glasses on your dining table, bar, kitchen etc.
More on barrels! - The “American Standard Barrel” is used for maturing bourbon whiskey in the USA and are required by American law to only be made from American new white oak which has been charred internally and externally prior to usage.
Once used these casks cannot be re-used to make bourbon by law , and they experience a second life maturing Scotch Whisky particularly in Scotland.. These "ex-bourbon" casks impart specific flavours like vanilla, caramel, and coconut to the whisky, enhanced by the charring creating a layer of ‘toasted’ wood inside the barrel.
Measurements
Each caddy has slightly different measurements as each stave is unique in shape and size but approximate measurements are as follows:
Metric: 45 cm long by 5.5 cm wide and 2.5 cm thickness
Inches 17 1/2 inches long by 2 1/4 inches wide and 7/8 inch thickness
Each caddy will hold 2 wine glasses with a stem of up to 1cm in thickness. Note for scales wine glasses are 19cm high ( and not included with the item)
The hole for the wine bottle neck is 32mm ( 1 1/4 inch diameter).
The caddies are also reversible and can be used either way up although I feel the grain is much more attractive when the stave is ‘outside up’ or concave.
Shipping
The shipping price quoted is for standard parcel rates from Royal Mail and once payment has been received, the wine caddy will ship within 1-2 business days (Monday through Friday).
