Pre-owned, Equate is a math game described as a "Scrabble with a math twist," where players form equations crossword-style to score points.

Gameplay Description Objective: Players use tiles to form valid mathematical equations, both horizontally and vertically, on a grid-based board.

Components: The game includes a board, tile racks for each player, and 190 tiles consisting of integers (0-9), fractions (like 1/2, 1/4), and mathematical operators (+, -, ×, ÷, =).

On Your Turn:  Players draw and hold a hand of tiles on their rack.  A player places a sequence of tiles on the board to create a complete and true equation (e.g., \(6\div 2=3\)).  Subsequent plays must build off existing equations on the board, similar to how words interlock in Scrabble.  Points are scored based on the value of the tiles and premium squares on the board (e.g., double/triple tile or equation scores). Division and fraction tiles often have higher point values.  An equation can be extended on either side as long as it remains true and contains only one equals sign.

Benefits for Homeschooling

Equate is considered a valuable educational tool, particularly for homeschooling, because it makes learning math fun and engaging. Specific benefits include:

Practice and Mastery: The game provides hands-on practice with fundamental arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), fractions, and the order of operations.

Conceptual Learning: It helps students develop mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills by requiring them to think critically about how numbers and operators can be combined to form valid equations.

Strategic Thinking: Players must use logical and abstract strategies to maximize their scores, plan future moves, and block opponents, which enhances critical thinking.

Confidence Building: Playing the game can build self-confidence in math skills, especially in a low-stress, game-based learning environment where failure is part of the process.

Flexibility and Adaptability: The game can be adjusted for various skill levels; for instance, the basic set includes integers and fractions, while advanced sets may include negative numbers and exponents. Players can also modify rules or tile sets for younger children, such as removing fractions or division tiles.

Engagement and Retention: Game-based learning is known to increase engagement and help with knowledge retention compared to traditional methods.

Overall, Equate is seen as a stimulating and effective way for children and adults to sharpen their math skills while enjoying a challenging game.
