Miraculous Medal, is a significant devotional item in the Catholic faith. It is also known as the Medal of the Immaculate Conception and is associated with a series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Saint Catherine Labouré in Paris in 1830.
History and Meaning
The medal's design was revealed to Saint Catherine Labouré by the Blessed Virgin Mary, who promised "great graces" to those who wear it with confidence.
Front Side:
Virgin Mary: Mary is shown standing on a globe, crushing the head of a serpent beneath her feet, which symbolizes her triumph over evil and Satan.
Rays of Light: Rays stream from her outstretched hands, symbolizing the graces God grants through her intercession to those who ask for them.
Inscription: The oval frame around the image contains the prayer: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee". The year 1830 is also visible.
Reverse Side:
"M" and Cross: A large letter "M" is surmounted by a cross with a bar, signifying the inseparable link between Mary and Jesus' mission of redemption and Mary standing at the foot of the Cross.
Two Hearts: Below the "M" are the Sacred Heart of Jesus (crowned with thorns) and the Immaculate Heart of Mary (pierced by a sword), symbolizing their shared love and suffering for humanity.
Twelve Stars: Twelve stars surround the perimeter, representing the twelve Apostles and the Church.
Significance
Mary promised "great graces" to all who wear the medal with confidence and faith. It is considered a testimony to faith and the power of prayer.
This medal is 1" in length with the jump ring and .5" wide.
It was in the same family since the 1940's or early 1950's, and we believe it was manufactured in France.
