Simply
put, this is one of the greatest, most underrated avant-rock albums of
all time. This album still sounds fresh today; I can only imagine the
reaction it generated when it was first released in 1980.
Picking
up from the first album, Onze danses pour combattre la migraine, for
this album Aksak Maboul recruited Fred Frith (guitar, bass, violin) and
Chris Cutler (drums), both of Henry Cow. With the addition on these two,
the music of Aksak Maboul went from being playfully avant-garde to
no-holds barred avant-prog. No musical stone is left un-turned. Every
track on this album is a genre-breaker.The middle passage where the rhythm section is going absolutely nuts and the horn section floats
this absolutely perfect melody over the chaos is haunting. "Inoculating
Rabies" is one of my favorite pieces. Who knew that punk rock could
feature a bassoon and an oboe? Cinema is a 20 minute track featuring some very
out-there and intense playing as well, including a blistering violin
solo. Again, the bassoon is quite prominently featured. Each track is
different, unique and rewarding in its own way.
This album comes
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Five stars doesn't even do it justice. All fans of
avant-prog, RIO, or avant euro-rock should do themselves a favor and buy
this album!
