This is an original stone lithograph published between 1853-54 by the U. S. Senate to report on explorations and surveys to ascertain the most practical route for a railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. The exploration party is crossing the Chowchillas River, located in the south-central portion of the San Joaquin Valley, California between the Mariposa and Fresno Rivers.
