In February 1948, he was traded to the Yankees. He became the third of the "Big Three" that led the Yankees pitching staff to secure 5 world championships between 1949-1953. He was selected to the 1951 American League All Star team and was the league's 1953 ERA leader. During the 1955 season, he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles where he finished his playing career on September 23, 1955. He went on to manage the Kansas City Athletics in 1963 and '64.
