Half Sumo
Collective was born from the brains (and bruises) of designer Luigi Scarcella
Perino and Alberto Marchetti, two lifelong martial artists with resumes that
could knock you out. Literally.
Luigi is a
3-time USA Kyokushin full-contact Karate champion who represented the USA at
the World Tournament in Tokyo in 2019 and 2023. Alberto is a Renzo Gracie Jiu
Jitsu black belt professor who’s battled on the world stage in seven global
tournaments.
HALF SUMO:
ONE AND A HALF WORDS, A WHOLE LOT OF SPIRIT
Damashi, or
in its more traditional spelling Damashii or Tamashii signifies the inherent
soul or spirit that inhabits every living person. In Budo culture Damashii is
often linked to the word Yamato, the old term for Japan as it refers to the
historical values of the Samurai of Integrity, Honor, Courage, Loyalty, Honesty
and Compassion.
We have
therefore imagined a powerful warrior, wearing a simple garment that only
partially covers his athletic body; the katana already swung, pointing down to
the ground, the grip is firm, but we don’t know yet if this warrior will have
the strength to raise it once more.
The doubts
are there, but the majestic phoenix rising behind his shoulder is an omen, a
manifestation of the samurai’s unrelenting spirit to rise and fight - we now
know the samurai spirit will always prevail.
The new vale
tudo inspired compression shorts can be worn independently while training no gi
grappling, or can be used as a first layer of protection under classic length
fight shorts or a Gi.
We also used
them successfully as an alternative to swimming trunks when at the pool or the
beach.
Premium
4-Way stretch fabric was used to insure unparalleled mobility when jogging,
grappling or striking. The adjustable elastic waist features an internal
drawstring for a comfortable yet firm fit necessary for all physical activity.
