The Game of Pope-Joan! (As Lately Played at Court) by “H.B.” [John Doyle]. Published by T. McLean, 26 Haymarket, December 10, 1839. Lithographed by A. Ducôte, 70 St. Martin’s Lane.
Artist: John Doyle (1797–1868), known as “H.B.”
Publisher: T. McLean, London, 1839
Printer: A. Ducôte, 70 St. Martin’s Lane, London
Medium: Original lithograph on wove paper
Description:
Original 1839 lithograph from John Doyle’s celebrated H.B. Political Sketches series, numbered 622 in the sequence of over 900 plates issued between 1829 and 1851. The composition depicts politicians and courtiers seated around a table engaged in a game of Pope Joan, a popular Victorian card game. The satire comments on political intrigue and shifting alliances at Queen Victoria’s court, referencing the 1839 Bedchamber Crisis and the early rivalry between Whigs and Tories. Figures likely represent Lord Melbourne, Sir Robert Peel, and other key statesmen, shown with speech bubbles about “Matrimony,” “Intrigue,” and “the Game.”
John Doyle (signing as “H.B.”) was among the most influential caricaturists of the early Victorian era, known for refined and subtle political satire published by Thomas McLean. His restrained draughtsmanship marked a stylistic shift from the more flamboyant satire of Gillray and Rowlandson, appealing to contemporary upper- and middle-class audiences.
Condition:
Good overall. Sheet toned and foxed, particularly to margins; edges with minor creasing and small tears not affecting image; printed area clean and well-defined. Paper slightly browned but retains strong impression and full border lines.
Notes:
Original issues of the H.B. Political Sketches are increasingly scarce in complete or undamaged form. This 1839 example captures the sophisticated wit and visual subtlety that defined Doyle’s approach to political caricature at the dawn of Queen Victoria’s reign.
