Marvelous antique Asian red lacquered 4 tier woven grass stackable Chinese Wedding basket with hand painted & etched details, purposely distressed finish handle, & handwrought bail handle on top. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. A Tisket… A Tasket… A BEAUTIFUL Red Basket!!! WOW!!! What a COOL FIND!!! This is a FANTASTIC 4 tier stackable antique Chinese Wedding basket composed of four interchangeable woven grass (or bamboo or maybe rattan) baskets or trays wearing a fabulous red lacquer with a purposely distressed “perfectly imperfect” finish & black lacquer dividing bands embellished with lovely hand etched details, black lacquer inside each basket, a lovely red lid with a decorative center detail bearing a beautiful aged patina, a tall handle attached to both sides of the lowest basket with delicately etched & painted details up the sides, and a hand wrought bail handle on the top of the larger handle. One of the baskets has ventilation holes and they are interchangeable apart from the basket on the bottom as the handle is attached to that one. SO… it’s a basket, on a basket, on a basket, on a BASKET… it is beautifully constructed and it’s AWESOME!!! These Wedding baskets were also referred to as “betrothal baskets” and they held a cultural significance and a historical value. They were traditionally used in the engagement process and the groom’s family would fill them with dowry gifts for the bride and/or her family. Those gifts would include food, clothing, and even red sheets for the wedding night!! Bow-chicka-wow-wow!!! Red symbolizes love, joy, and prosperity and is still a prominent color in Chinese weddings. It would be gorgeous to use as storage for linens in your living room, clothing or sheets in your bedroom, towels & accessories in your bathroom, breads and non-perishables in the kitchen, or simply to add a touch of history & elegance to any space as a decorative display.
