A large cent is a type of coin that was used in the United States from 1793 to 1857. It was made of pure copper and had a diameter of about one inch. The large cent was one of the first coins issued by the US Mint and was initially valued at 1/100th of a US dollar. Over time, the design of the large cent changed several times, with different images and inscriptions appearing on the coin. In 1857, the large cent was replaced by the smaller, more cost-effective small cent, which is still in use today.
