The designs themselves are often an artistic fusion of realism and fantasy, a stylized representation of plants, animals and symbolic objects: the carnation, tulip, onion, rose, pelican, rabbit, peacock, dragon, wreath, fern, oak-leaf, acorn, wolf's paw, candle, star, heart, pomegranate, cross, keys, other religious symbols, etc. Other designs are more strongly geometric in character, with hexagons, intersecting lines, squares, X's and I's, diamond shapes, chain links, and similar figures. The designs include both border patterns and central patterns.
