A rare WWI "CAMP SHERMAN U. S.A." purple felt pennant with red edging and tassels is available for sale.  It has an impressive illustration of the Camp Sherman symbol of Two Crossed Rifles.  The stitching  is still complete and secure on all the letters, the edging and the rifles.  The felt is still in sturdy condition.

The tip and  a tassel of this pennant is missing. It shows wear and age as shown in the photos.  The purple and red felt is sturdy.

An elderly Ohio man once told me about a military camp in Ohio that he said was all built of local cedar.  He said that when they were done with it they burned all of the buildings.  It's possible that he was describing Camp Sherman.

Camp Sherman, Ohio's WWI Soldier Factory

Camp Sherman was located in 

Chillicothe, Ohio. It was a large military cantonment built in 1917, during World War I. It quickly became one of the largest constructed for the war effort. The camp trained hundreds of thousands of soldiers and was home to the 83rd and 95th divisions of the U.S. Army. After the war, the camp was disassembled, and the land now includes: 

• The Camp Sherman Joint Training Center, a military training site for the Ohio Army National Guard.

• Hopewell Culture National Historic Park.

• Chillicothe Veterans Administration Hospital.

• Chillicothe Correctional Institute. 

Historical Significance:

• WWI Training Camp: Camp Sherman played a crucial role in training American soldiers for World War I.

• Impact on Chillicothe: The camp's construction transformed the small town of Chillicothe, quadrupling its population almost overnight.

• Hopewell Culture: The land where Camp Sherman was built also holds historical significance as it was formerly home to the Hopewell culture of American Indians, who constructed large ceremonial earthworks. Some ancient earthworks were affected by the camp's construction.
