The State University of New York Maritime College is a US service academy located in Fort Schuyler, Throggs Neck, the Bronx, New York. The college is part of the State University of New York, aka SUNY. The college was founded in 1874 and it is one of only seven degree maritime academies in the US. The academy trains officers to serve in the US Merchant Marine branches of the military and maritime transportation industry.

In the last decade, the US Congress approved $300 million dollars for the replacement of the academy’s training ship the NSMV Empire State VI. Thus, Suny Maritime, as it is unofficially called, operates a new training ship, the NSMV Empire State VII as depicted on this Nautical Chart Watercolor Painting or Print. The Hanwha Philly Shipyard of Philadelphia, PA, under the US Maritime Administration, built the NSMV Empire State VII and it was delivered to SUNY Maritime. She can accommodate up to 600 cadets and, in a humanitarian emergency, could accommodate up to 1,000 people! Because the US Coast Guard regulations allow the use of Roman numerals in a ship’s name, SUNY refers to her as the NSMV Empire State VII; nevertheless, she displays her name simply as Empire State without a numeral.


NSMV stands for National Security Multi-Mission Vessels of which five identical ships, including the NSMV Empire State V11, costing a total of 1.5$ billion dollars have been built, and are being built, using a design which was developed by the Herbert Engineering Corporation of Alameda, California. The Empire State VII was the first of these ships to be built, followed soon after by the Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s NSMV Patriot. The remaining three training ships will serve the maritime academies in ME,TX and CA. While these state of the art vessels are primarily training ships with all the facilities needed for cadet training, the NSMV class ships are also equipped for disaster relief; therefore, they each have a Roll-On/Roll-Off side ramp, container space for transporting vehicles, a crane, and a helipad. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

About the Artist

William B. MacGregor, Jr. Watercolors the Junkyard and Nautical Chart Artist

William B. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA in 1947, the son and the grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters who also were artists. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts. Beginning in May, 2018, and for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA in an exhibit entitled: “Lookin’ East: Art and Imagination of the New England Hot Rod".
