Map of the Holy Land by Philipp Cluver printed in 1697.

Copper engraved map on hand laid paper. Later hand colouring

Philipp Cluver (1580 - 1622) was born in Danzig and studied in Leyden and Oxford.  He wrote a number of books of historical geography and is considered the founder of this area of study.  His books remained in print long after his death.  His last, and most important work,  'Introductions in Universam Gerographicam' was a comprehensive historical geography of the world and was first published posthumously in 1624.  The book was re-published many times in following years.  This map appeared in the 1697 edition published in Amsterdam by Joannem Wolters.
