Blue cloth boards with gilt title and characters and floral design; gilt title to spine. Blue topstain. Untrimmed fore- and bottom edges. Light rubbing to extremities; cloth weak at top of spine. Top corners lightly nudged. Light spotting to fore-edge. Tanning to endpapers; very light spotting to half title and rear flyleaf. Unmarked interior. Matching blue cloth slipcase with red interior. Very Good / Very Good Plus (slipcase).

Illustrator Hugh Thomson (1860 – 1920) was born at Coleraine near Derry, Ireland. He is best known for his elaborate color paintings and pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie - and of course, William Shakespeare. Thomson inaugurated the Cranford School of Illustration in 1891.
