Pokémon Trading Card Game (abbreviated PTCG or Pokémon TCG) is a strategy-based game that is usually played on a designated playmat where two players assume the role of Pokémon Trainer and use their Pokémon to battle one another in order to claim the title of Pokémon Master. It was first released in Japan in 1996. In 1999, it was released in the United States by Wizards of the Coast. Nintendo later acquired the license and transferred it to The Pokémon Company International in 2003.
