Description: Leather-bound. Quarto. 9 in. x 6 1/4 in.). Smooth calf, elaborately ruled, framed and tooled in blind. Beveled boards. Moderate scuffing to boards and rubbing to extremities. Each volume shows two spine labels in contrasting black. One label missing and another partially worn away. Publisher's red stain to all edges. Nonpareil endpapers of orange, white, red, olive and navy. Each volume has half-title and two title pages, the former with a small engraving. Eight of the ten volumes have full-page frontis illustrations -- portraits, a document, some coins. (Volumes VI and IX have none). A generally sound, clean set, quite tightly bound, and eminently useable!

This work and the Life of Washington were Sparks' most valuable contributions. Very Good.
