The PL 330 Padlock
The Abloy 330 (often designated PL330, PLM330, or variants like “330‑25”, “330‑50”) is a medium‑strength padlock designed for robust use in industrial, outdoor, and general‑purpose settings.
It uses Abloy’s Sentry cylinder / key profile (distinct from their “Classic” or “Protec²” systems). The Sentry platform is a rotating disc locking mechanism designed for durability and resistance to tampering.
In the Abloy product line, PL330 is rated Grade 3 under EN 12320 for padlocks (for certain shackle sizes) — meaning it's mid-level in terms of physical attack resistance.
| Component | Typical Spec / Material | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Brass (chrome‑plated) | Provides corrosion resistance and ease of machining. |
| Shackle | Hardened boron steel (case-hardened) | Helps resist cutting, sawing, and other physical attacks. |
| Shackle diameter | 8 mm (≈ 5/16″) in many models | This is a commonly listed diameter for PL330 models. |
| Shackle height (clearance) | 25 mm | |
| Body width / form factor | Around 48 mm width, rectangular body | 48 mm width body for a PL330 model. |
The Sentry key system is based on Abloy’s rotating disc (disc detainer) principle. Rather than pins and springs, it uses rotating discs that must align correctly to allow the lock to turn.
Sentry is a more modern/professional platform (compared to older “Classic”) and has features like no critical springs in the core, which reduces failure from corrosion or wear.
The Sentry key is symmetrical (i.e. it can be inserted either way), making it convenient in everyday use.
The Sentry system is also advertised as being fully resistant to bumping and giving smooth operation in harsh environments.
The cylinder is rear-loaded (i.e., accessible from the back of the lock) for enhanced protection against frontal attacks.
Physical resistance: The hardened boron steel shackle and robust body provide decent resistance to cutting and forced entry (especially for its class).
No springs in core: Because the lock uses rotating disc technology rather than spring-loaded pins, there’s less vulnerability to spring failure, dirt intrusion, or corrosion over time.
Weather robustness: Especially in SWP versions, the sealing and design allow for strong resistance against ingress of dust, water, and harsh conditions.
Key control / restricted keyway: Abloy often maintains control over key blanks and duplication. In many markets, keys for Sentry locks are restricted and require authorization.
Key removable only when locked: Many versions of PL330 are designed so the key can only be removed when the lock is in the locked position. This helps prevent accidentally leaving it unlocked.
